Traditional Ukrainian ceramics: how to use properly elements of Trypillian culture in the modern interior

In order to understand the modernity, it is sometimes worth going to the museum and get acquainted with the pottery masterpieces of Ukrainian craftsmen, paying attention to the technique of their decoration and feel the touch of the experience of our ancestors.

Since ancient times, Ukrainian cuisine has been known throughout the world, and it isn’t surprising that the plates and bowls played an important role. They were treated respectfully, handmade and decorated with amulets and symbols.

And even now, in the era of innovative technologies, people don’t forget about pottery traditions of masters and continue to develop them, embodying their ideas in decoration of dishes and home furnishings. Ceramic products are becoming more and more popular and suit any modern design.

The team of TS decided to get acquainted with the traditional utensils of Ukrainians and learned about the features of different techniques of ceramics and willingly share with you.

Types and centres of pottery in Ukraine

The oldest examples of Ukrainian ceramics have beeb found in many villages of Poltava region, but the most interesting centres for its production are Kosiv and Pistin (Ivano-Frankivsk oblast).

Hutsul ceramics

Hutsul ceramics emerged in the Hutsulshchyna, and arose in the XV century and since that time hasn’t lost it s popularity, and now goes on maintaining its authenticity and uniqueness. There the special direction appeared - tiled stoves. These  ones were multi-tier stoves, which were used for heating the dwelling, served as a warm bed and a place for cooking.

One of the types of ceramics, which is burned without access to air, is Gavaret's black ceramics. Traditionally, such items are in silver or black colour. Until the XIX century it actively developed on the territory of Ukraine, but in the next century, this fishery fell off. However, Dmitry Vyslinsky managed to revive the old art and won first place at the International Ceramic Exhibition in Italy.

Another interesting fact is that this kind of ceramics is produced from several varieties of white clay for better strength, and the products are burned with firewood and aren’t covered with watery ornaments. Today, only four Ukrainian craftsmen deal with such art.

Plots on tiles are very interesting, as well as the technique of their manufacture. They depicted the everyday life, as well as the embodiment of fantasies and the spectacular of plexus: human figures, birds, animals and plants create the perfect composition.

The most famous and the youngest ceramics is Opishnia ceramics, which comes from Poltava region. Its feature is that it is made without previous sketches. Such ceramic products are yellowish-brown and created for forty days. If we talk about the painting of jugs and bowls, it is really diverse, as artists depict the creation of nature in combination with human figures. It is also important that Opishnia ceramicsis characterized by flaunting , the lines on the products are painted with the help of a metal thole, creating beautiful patterns.

Examples of traditional Ukrainian ceramics continue to conquer the hearts of people, perfectly complement any design of the room and make it cosier. They are the inspiration for designing new collections and decoration for the modern interior.
