Ukrainian customs were connected with threshold, especially the ceremony of two family fires or a wedding invitation. And it was considered to be a symbol of the beginning and end of the house, that’s why home was swept from threshold to pokut.

All elements could be present in the housing, but it was only possible to live there when a fire broke out. Ukrainians loved stoves very much, because they warmed the house very well when it was bad weather outside and were wonderful decorations for the rooms. Spiritual conversations with neighbors were held in front of them, children were playing, delicious bread was baked and borsch with rolls was cooked.

When and how did the construction of dwelling begin

In order to make the construction successful, it was important to lay the foundations of the homestead. The construction most often began in the spring or summer. According to legends, it was necessary to begin construction in the new month to bring happiness and wealth to home. Some ceremonies even included sacrifices for the further well-being of the family.

Where does the white hut come from

Prototype of traditional dwelling is Breithaus ("enormous residential building"), known in the Western Asia and the Caucasus, and has a three-chambered structure, and entrance is located on the long wall.

The traditional dwelling looks like the residential buildings of the southern Slavs, and an open fire (hearth) was borrowed from the Czechs.

Ukrainians are nimble people. In addition to design of their houses, they have come up with various customs and ceremonies, so as not to be bored while working.

Traditional ukrainian house

  • The place for construction should have been chosen by a domestic animal that lies in the beautiful places
  • If dews appear on things left out on the street at night, then construction will be successful
  • To establish housing in places where lightning fell or near cemetery was strictly forbidden, because that predicted a mischief
  • There was a custom to invite a good goblin to home in order to protect the dwelling from misfortunes. He was treated, placated and even people were singing lullabies for him
  • Our ancestors believed in stove spirit who guarded a heater, so they tried to keep it clean and smear on time
  • It was necessary to please all the spirits and to monitor the cleanness of the house in order to live happily there
  • Patterns of tree-life or solar signs served as protection from all sorts of evil.
