Three Snails team went to Chernobyl Renaissance Mermaid Fest in Prybirsk village, the Kyiv region, June 9-12 to celebrate the Mermaid week - the week after Trinity or Green Holidays.
We felt original Ukrainian traditions, an interesting tandem of pagan and Christian beliefs which don’t contradict but weirdly mingle in our modern culture. And the haunted Chernobyl area added a particular mystique to this festival.
Swimming is not allowed on Trinity as mermaids can take you to deep waters. But they are not always that bad. These days mermaids help people to have great crops harvest doing their best in the fields. That's why people “bribe” them with gifts like fresh baked bread loaf or a piece of cloth. The main idea of the fest is to say a good bye to these creatures and to protect oneself with sagebrush which scares them.
During the fest everyone was making wreaths for that reason, singing together with authentic groups such as ‘Tsaryna’, ‘Kutochany’, ‘Rozhanytsya’, ‘Svarytsevychi’, enjoying Ukrainian folk songs by Dominica Chekun and ethnic motifs performed by ‘Brama Do’ and Lis’.
We brought some holiday spirit and want to share with you.
